“Coco used to knock my old camera over all the time. This one just wobbles and stands back up. The one-tap return to the dock is so convenient, no more hunting for the cable.”
5 things to know before you leave your pet home alone
Being busy at work is not a reason for your pet to be lonely
By the PetMommy team
You know that look at the door when you pick up your keys. You tell yourself they'll be fine, then spend the morning worrying. These five things can make the day easier for both of you.

Bored pets can get stressed, restless and overeat
You come home to a chewed shoe and a guilty face. It's easy to feel frustrated, but it's usually just boredom. Dogs and cats need things to do, and when there's nothing, they find their own entertainment: chewing, scratching, barking, knocking things over.
Day after day, boredom can build into stress, restlessness and low mood, and some pets eat more simply because there's nothing else to do, which can mean weight gain over time. It's fixable. When pets have more to do, you often see the change quickly. If it keeps happening, mention it to your vet.

Spend time with your pet before you leave
The goodbye is the hardest part: the little sigh, the long look. A walk or play session before you go burns the energy that would otherwise turn into chewing and barking. It also helps keep a healthy weight, which matters because a bored pet may snack when there's nothing else to do.
A few habits help:
- Feed them and play or walk them before you go.
- Keep goodbyes short and relaxed.
- Do the same thing every day, so they know what comes next.
If your pet seems very distressed when you leave, ask your vet or a trainer.

Leave your pet something to do
Think about the day from your pet's POV: hours of quiet, a window, and nothing else. A pet with nothing to do will find something to do, and it's rarely something you want to come home to.
A puzzle feeder, lick mat, scratching post or a perch by the window gives them something to work on. That can mean fewer chewed cables and less snacking out of boredom, and the day goes faster for them. Swap the toys now and then so they stay interesting. Choose ones that suit your pet's size, avoid anything they can swallow, and supervise them the first few times.

Check in on your pet during the day
You'll probably open the app at lunch just to see them. Not knowing how they are is what worries you. Seeing them settles you, and it can help them too. Many pets recognise a familiar voice, so a calm hello can make their afternoon feel less long.
It doesn't work for every pet. Some get more excited when they hear you. Start with a short, calm hello and see how yours reacts.

If you get a camera, check these four things
A camera is only useful if it solves your worries. The wrong one shows you an empty room, or isn't working when you check. Before you buy, ask:
- Can it see the whole home, or only one corner?
- Does it need drilling or wiring, and can you move it?
- Can you talk and play, or only watch?
- Does it stay powered and upright when you're out?
If the answer is yes to all four, that's a very different camera from one fixed on a shelf.
You can't be home all day. But you can know how they're doing.

“The 4MP picture is really sharp, I can actually see her whiskers. The cat wand is a big hit with Nala, she attacks it every time I turn it on.”

“I work 10-hour days and always wondered what Mochi does all day. Turns out she sleeps under my bed, which my old fixed camera could never see. Now I just drive over and say hi. Setup took about 10 minutes.”

“Two views on the app at once is great. One lens watches the living room while the other checks the kitchen counter, which Teh is not allowed on. Caught him twice already.”

“Bruno gets anxious when I leave, so hearing my voice through the speaker really calms him. Only thing is I have to remember to charge it once a week.”

“The laser is the best part. I play with Luna during my lunch break. She now waits by the robot when it starts moving, haha.”

“Night vision is clearer than I expected. I checked on Snowy at 2am when I was travelling for work and could see her sleeping on the sofa.”

“Works well and the app is easy. Simba was scared of it for the first day but now follows it around. Wish the camera could tilt up a bit more to see the top of the shelf.”

“Got it for my parents so they can see Oreo while I’m overseas. They’re not techy but managed the app fine after I shared access with them.”

“Rented HDB room, can’t drill or run wires, so this was perfect. Just put it on the floor and it goes anywhere. Gets over my door sill no problem.”

“Biscuit likes to sneak into the bedroom when I’m out. Now I can drive the robot in and tell him to get off the bed. The motion recording even saved a clip of him doing zoomies in the hallway.”

“Good value compared with the big brands. Picture is clear on my phone. Took a couple of tries to connect to WiFi (make sure you use 2.4GHz), but fine after that.”
