4 reasons you NEED to get rid of your old CCTV camera

By the PetMommy team

You open the app to check on your pet and see an empty room. CCTV was built to watch a doorway or a driveway, not a pet that wanders from the sofa to the kitchen to under the bed. Here's why it keeps missing them, and what to use instead.

Left: a CCTV view of an empty living room. Right: the cat, out of frame, reaching toward a pot of boiling water on the kitchen counter.

Your pet isn't even in the frame

A fixed camera shows one angle. A wide lens helps a little, but it can't see around corners, behind the sofa or into the next room. Pets spend their day moving between favourite spots, and most of those spots aren't in the picture.

You open the app, see nothing, and end up more worried than before.

Why it matters: an empty room could mean your pet is asleep next door, or that something is wrong. You can't tell which, so you keep checking all day.

The cable on your CCTV camera is a safety hazard for your pet

Many CCTV systems need mounting brackets and power or network cables. In a rented home, drilling usually isn't allowed. Bored or teething pets chew cables, and a chewed cable can give them an electric shock.

Cameras that need no installation are easier to live with, and easier to move when you rearrange the room.

Why it matters: a camera that puts your pet at risk is worse than no camera.

You can't even talk or play with your pets

CCTV is made for security. It records what happens. It isn't made to call your dog over, calm your cat down or play with either of them. Some cameras have a speaker, but they weren't designed specifically for your pet.

If your pet is stressed, hearing your voice can help. If they're bored, a few minutes of play can change their afternoon. A camera that only watches does neither.

Why it matters: a normal camera can show you a bored or restless pet, but it can't do anything about it. All you can do is watch.

You need a camera designed specifically for a home with pets

Pets knock things over, sit on things and push things around. A camera on the floor or a low shelf gets bumped. Battery cameras run flat, and plug-in ones get pulled out or stay stuck by a socket. Either way, you only find out they're off when you check.

A camera for a home with pets has to go where your pet goes, work without drilling or wiring, let you talk and play, and still work after your pet has knocked it over.

Why it matters: the day something goes wrong is the day you most need your camera. If it's off, you won't know until it's too late.

Here's a camera that handles all four.

“Coco used to knock my old camera over all the time. This one just wobbles and stands back up. The one-tap return to the dock is so convenient, no more hunting for the cable.”

“The 4MP picture is really sharp, I can actually see her whiskers. The cat wand is a big hit with Nala, she attacks it every time I turn it on.”

“I work 10-hour days and always wondered what Mochi does all day. Turns out she sleeps under my bed, which my old fixed camera could never see. Now I just drive over and say hi. Setup took about 10 minutes.”

“Two views on the app at once is great. One lens watches the living room while the other checks the kitchen counter, which Teh is not allowed on. Caught him twice already.”

“Bruno gets anxious when I leave, so hearing my voice through the speaker really calms him. Only thing is I have to remember to charge it once a week.”

“The laser is the best part. I play with Luna during my lunch break. She now waits by the robot when it starts moving, haha.”

“Works well and the app is easy. Simba was scared of it for the first day but now follows it around. Wish the camera could tilt up a bit more to see the top of the shelf.”

“Got it for my parents so they can see Oreo while I’m overseas. They’re not techy but managed the app fine after I shared access with them.”

“Rented HDB room, can’t drill or run wires, so this was perfect. Just put it on the floor and it goes anywhere. Gets over my door sill no problem.”

“Biscuit likes to sneak into the bedroom when I’m out. Now I can drive the robot in and tell him to get off the bed. The motion recording even saved a clip of him doing zoomies in the hallway.”

“Good value compared with the big brands. Picture is clear on my phone. Took a couple of tries to connect to WiFi (make sure you use 2.4GHz), but fine after that.”
